At Play / Now Open

Forget dining! Lincoln Square gets top shops The Dressing Room, 4635 N. Lincoln Ave., 773-728-0088. Lincoln Square desperately needed a women's clothing boutique, and this one -- opened by pals Barbara Ruiz and Sarah Sanchez -- delivers. Finds include hand-printed tees by Brighton Park Press ($30) and angora shrugs by Kenzie ($56.50). Local designers get their due, too, with copper-and-stone designs from Sarah Teague ($35-$65), plus Deana Rose's earrings and necklaces made from Austrian crystal.

More Than Brats and Beer
Finally, Lincoln Square shoppers have a clothing boutique that carries more than traditional German dirndl, which although lovely, aren't exactly stylish. "We both love this neighborhood," says Barbara Ruiz, who owns The Dressing Room (4635 N. Lincoln Ave.; 773-728-0088) with long-time friend Sarah Sanchez. "But always said the only thing missing is a clothing store." Styles at the shop skew casual, but there are enough satin skirts and low-cut tops to pull something together for a dressy night on the town. We spotted vests from Tulle ($52); work-appropriate sweaters with long sleeves and V-necks from 525 America ($40); pieces from local designer Neesh by D.A.R., including the line?s Best Pant trousers ($110); and embroidered jeans for about $100. "We want people to be able to come in and buy something without feeling too guilty about splurging," says Ruiz. There's also a great selection of sparkly evening bags, jewelry from local designers -- including Sarah Teague, Laura Davis, and Deana Rose -- belts, hats, scarves, and other accessories.

Shop Talk / Issue No. 26

JUST OPENED: "German 'hood Lincoln Square just hit a gentrification milestone: its first fashion boutique. Within the chartreuse walls, table brim with girly accessories like long pearls ($32) and sequined sashes ($9 - $12). Corduroy Kenzie blazers ($60) and jeans by Colins and IT ($90 - $95) that stand out with crimson and gold embroidery. Finish off your look with a slouchy jewel-toned hobo bag ($25 - $50) and you're one foxy fraulein."

The Budgeting Babe
Words of Wisdom Tuesday, August 09, 2005
posted by Nicole @ 8:43 AM

... On the subject of "words of wisdom," I'm pleased to announce that Budgeting Babe will host another guest blogger in the near future. Barbara Ruiz and Sarah Sanchez, co-owners of The Dressing Room, a new affordable, trendy boutique fashion store in Chicago (it opens today in the Lincoln Square neighborhood) will provide thoughts on opening a new store, pursuing career changes and following their dreams. They're clearly excited about the opening:

"Throughout the final stages of our construction and finishing we needed to work with the door locked," says co-owner Sarah Sanchez. "When we forgot to do that people would keep popping in with the excitement of us finally be open for business. It wasn't always so easy to tell them they had to wait another week." I look forward to their story. Meanwhile, if you're in Chicago, check out the store (4635 N. Lincoln). Need more incentive? According to The Dressing Room's press release, this week's guests will receive "special gifts" for stopping by.
